Here we summarize common ways to reach Genova and give general advice about accommodation.

By plane

Here are the airports near Genova with their travel times, to help you minimize stopovers, find better fares, and shorten your journey.

  • Genova Airport (GOA) is the most immediate connection. There are daily direct flights from/to Munich, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Barcelona, as well as several domestic connections and other weekly international flights. The direct bus line Volabus connects the airport with the city center in 30 minutes. The Volabus line can only be boarded with the “AMT MET DAILY” ticket (€10), which is also valid on all other bus services for 24 hours.
    As a cheaper alternative, you can use the Airlink shuttle bus, which connects the airport with the Genova Sestri Ponente Aeroporto train station, from where frequent trains head to the city center. A regular “AMT Integrato” ticket (€2.20) allows you to board the Airlink bus, urban buses, and any regional train within the urban area for 110 minutes. AMT tickets can be purchased at tobacconists or on the AMT Genova app (Play store, App Store). Paper tickets must be stamped; tickets purchased via the AMT Genova app become valid immediately after purchase (do not purchase in advance). AMT tickets, with the exception of the AMT Integrato (€2.20) ticket, are not valid on regional trains.
    Taxis are available just outside the airport. Fare: 25-40€. Radiotaxi: +39 010 5966.
  • Pisa Airport (PSA) offers many flights to European cities. You can easily walk from the airport to the Pisa Centrale station (15 minutes), or take the PisaMover shuttle (€6.50). Frequent trains connect Pisa and Genova in about two hours.
  • Malpensa Airport (MXP) offers many international connections, including intercontinental flights. The Malpensa Express train connects the airport to Milano Centrale station, from which trains leave for Genova almost every hour. The entire journey from Malpensa to Genova takes about three hours. Note that no train runs between Milano and Genova after 21:10.

    Other airports:
  • Linate Airport (LIN) has many short-haul connections with the main European hubs. The Milano Centrale or Milano Rogoredo stations can be reached via the Milan metro (urban ticket, €2.20); from these stations, Genova is about two hours away.
  • Turin Airport (TRN) has several connections with European cities. The Torino Aeroporto di Caselle station connects the airport with the railway network. Genova can be reached in about three hours, including transfer time.
  • Bergamo Airport (BGY) offers many low-cost flights. Flixbus operates several direct buses between the airport and Genova, taking about three hours. The Bergamo train station is connected with the airport by the ATB Airport Bus; a 3-zone ticket (€3) is needed.
  • Nice Airport (NCE) offers many connections with European cities, especially within the Air France-KLM network. Flixbus operates several direct buses which connect Nice to Genova in about three hours. A short tram ride connects the airport with the Nice Saint-Augustin train station at the Grand Arénas tram stop. The tram ride is free between the airport terminals and Grand Arénas. From Nice Saint-Augustin, TER trains operated by SNCF go to the Ventimiglia (Vintimille) border station, which has almost hourly connections to Genova, operated by Trenitalia. The entire train ride from Nice to Genova takes about four hours.

By train

Refer to the Trenitalia website for national connections. Please note that tickets are valid only for the specific train for which they are purchased, unless otherwise indicated.

The Genova Piazza Principe and the Genova Brignole train stations are both located in the city center, the latter being closer to the conference venue. Several trains from/to Milano and Torino only stop in Genova Piazza Principe; frequent regional trains connect the two stations (€1.60 Trenitalia ticket or €2.20 bus+train AMT ticket).

We recommend using DB‘s search engine for international journeys with multiple connections. Attendees from Germany who wish to avoid multiple connections in Switzerland are advised to set Brennero/Brenner as an intermediate stop.

Accommodation

Genoa offers a wide range of accommodation options for tourists and visitors.
February is considered low season, so it is usually not too difficult to find a suitable accommodation with the most common search engines.
Genova is geographically and socially very varied, and this is reflected in the type and comfort of the accommodation.
Having in mind the ease of reaching the venue and the amenity of the accommodation, we provide you the following information about different areas of the city:

  1. The Sturla and Albaro districts are close to the venue (15-20 mins on foot) and are home to mid- to high-end hotels. They are close to the sea and sea-walks with nice sceneries.
  2. The districts of Foce, Carignano, San Vincenzo and Portoria are very close to the main train station and to the main attractions of the city. They are home to hotels and accommodations in any range. The conference venue can be reached in around 20-30 mins by public transportation.
  3. The “centro storico” is the medieval heart of the city with plenty of accommodations and attractions. Please be advised that, due to its very narrow and winding roads, some areas could be not very safe, especially in the evening and night hours. If in doubt, please choose elsewhere or stick to the main streets. 20-30 mins to the conference venue by public transportation.
  4. Towards the east end of the city are the “Riviera” districts of Quarto, Quinto and Nervi, with a marked maritime scenery. 25-40 minutes to the conference venue by public transportation.
